Handmade at the forge, in Laguiole
Complete control of the production, craftsmen know-how, high quality standards and History are Forge de Laguiole source of fame and signature appreciated by all connoisseurs.
All Forge de Laguiole corkscrews are handmade at the smithy (forge), assembled and polished by the same dedicated craftsman. Those sommelier knives are made of the extremely high-quality French T12 stainless steel, forged in-house by their blacksmiths, which makes them extremely resistant hence can withstand intensive use for wine professionals and amateurs alike. The forge is truly located in the village of Laguiole, France, which gave birth in the XIXth century to the world-famous knives.
The bee is forged in one piece with the spring and most Forge de Laguiole corkscrews feature the traditional shepherd's cross on the handle. The legend tells that shepherds used to plant the blade of their knife in their bread. As the knife stood up vertically it made the shape of a cross with the bread, which provided them with a focus for their prayer.
The conical spiral, with 5 turns, optimizes the functionality, especially for the delicate corks of the finest vintage wines, while the blade is non-serrated to achieve a clean cut and provide ease of sharpening. It also doubles as a bottle cap opener.
Engraved Cape: the "Pinot Noir" series has the cape (upper part of the lever) engraved with this new pattern. "Pinot Noir" design is inspired by the shape of the vine branches and the foamy leaves of the famous grape variety.
Satin or Shiny finish: Forge de Laguiole precious wood handles offer the choice of satin (matte) or high polish (shiny) finish for their metal parts (bolsters, screw, spring, bee, blade...)
Horn or Bone handles come with a shiny finish only, at the exception of the traditional Aubrac cow horn handle, which is assembled with matte stainless steel only.
This handle material: Briar wood (Erica arborea) harvested in France. Briar wood is a typical wood of the Mediterranean region and France in particular. Extremely solid and heat resistant, Briar wood unveils magnificent grain and patterns thanks to the polishing , making it a luxury wood used in jewelry.
